Melbourne Bike Share survey results

A total of 868 people completed the survey conducted by Melbourne Bike Share to gauge interest in the scheme.

Of the respondents, 437 (50%) indicated that they ‘probably’ or ‘definitely’ would use the scheme. Of these respondents, 64% indicated that they would prefer to bring their own helmet. The recurring themes being ‘hygiene’ (‘Had enough nits when the children were at school’, ‘Sharing a helmet is a bit like sharing underwear’) and safety (‘It’s safety equipment, mine has been cared for’). For the remaining 36% who would prefer to hire a helmet, the most common reason is convenience (‘can be more spontaneous, but, would need to be good/clean etc’, ‘sometimes I need to use the bike not by plan, may not bring helmet with me’).

Of the group that indicated that they are likely to use the scheme, over 90% see it as an extension of the public transport system. On the question of station locations, following were the favoured sites:

  • Train stations (44%)
  • Universities (15%)
  • St Kilda Rd (6%)
  • Docklands (5%)

(See the ‘Stations’ tab on www.melbournebikeshare.com.au to check if there will be a station handy for you; we are in the process of installing the remaining 40 stations in the next few weeks.)

A large number of respondents - 296 (34%) - are undecided about whether they will use Melbourne Bike Share. Of these, many want to see where the stations will be located, while 46% would like to be able to hire a helmet.

135 (16%) indicated that they are ‘unlikely’ to use – or will ‘definitely’ not use – the scheme. For these respondents, the major inhibiting factors are as follows (many did not cite a reason):

  • Unavailability of helmets (24%)
  • The fact that they have their own bike (10%)
  • Price (7%)

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete the survey. The information has been very useful for planning purposes – particularly for station selection. We acknowledge that the ‘helmet’ issue is specific to Melbourne and note the comments made by some regarding the effect that this issue will have on their likely usage.

We are investigating a number of options (you can purchase a helmet for $25 when you take out an annual Bike Share subscription) including vending. However, we must address the hygiene and safety considerations that many survey respondents commented upon.

We will be announcing the winner of the survey competition in the next few days.
